East Newport Under 16 Cycle Speedway Team raced in their first ever British u16 Team Championship this past weekend at Go-Ride club Newport. Racing against Exeter, Horspath and Stockport 2006 in their semi-final, the young East Newport riders Aaron Hughes, Jack Turner, Ryan Lewis, Louis Harvey and Earl Broomfield rode above themselves to reach their first British u16 Team final.
In the final the East Newport team were up against pre match favourites Poole, Sandwell and Ipswich. Manager Tony Bennett said "To make the final was a fantastic achievement, and to hear positive remarks from former World and British Champion Roger Ellis about the East Newport riders makes it all the more pleasing to work with these youngsters. As long as we can keep these riders together hopefully one day we will become British Team Champions."
Poole ran out winners on 50 points, Sandwell 2nd on 47, East Newport 3rd 38, Ipswich 4th 23.
