'East Newport Open Indoor' race report
2010-02-28 23:54 by Tony Bennett
The last indoor race at Underwood was well supported by Birmingham, Swindon, Newport and
East-Newport riders. From youngsters to vets, some gifted riders showed how well they could adapt
to the slippery indoor surface of Underwood. It is unfortunate that all the Sunday sessions have
followed Archery training as the feathers and hay targets leave a fine layer of "dust" that no
amount of sweeping can totally remove!
Twenty heats for twenty riders followed by a Vets final, Senior A+B finals, U16 final and U14 final.
Heat one, Rob Absalom powered out of the gate and rode to an easy win.
Heat two, first a restart then an exclusion for Martin Glover after movement at the tapes. From the
pits area it appeared he just lost his balance before the tapes rose! Neil Power got out of the
gate first and stayed in front of Colin Wildy and Matt Davis till the end.
Heat three, Aaron Hughes had one of his quickest ever gates and held of Paul Timms to the finish
line.
Heat four, Nathan Groves excluded leaving Ryan Hughes to take the win and Louis Harvey second and
Adam Bennett in third.
Heat five. A rerun of yesterdays conflict between son and father Josh and Gilbert Davis. Poor Josh
was excluded at the tapes and the race was rerun with just three riders. Marcus Wadhams exploded
out of the gate from grid four to take the win over Chris Timms, who could ride the track along many
a different race-line to those normally seen at Underwood.
Heat six, with Louis Harvey on gate 2 and Aaron Hughes on gate 3 it was bound to be a cracking race.
Both gave no quarter on the first bend with the result a crash and restart! Louis stormed from the
gate with Aaron using all his skill to try and pass him. Two attempted undertakes failed to give
Aaron the edge as he lost too much momentum on the exit of the bend. So very near. A win for
Louis.
Heat seven, Ryan Hughes charged from the gate leaving the other riders to chase. Vets rider, Paul
Timms was unlucky to take only third place as his smooth and very swift cornering technique was a
pleasure to watch.
Heat eight, Chris Timms led from start to finish.
Heat nine, Marcus Wadhams first closely followed by Nathan Groves. Martin Glover collided and
pulled out of the race to leave Ryan Lewis take third position.
Heat ten, Gilbert gated around Neil Power but both ran out of space on the 2nd lap to force a
restart. A strange decision by the referee but all four riders were happy with it! Neil took the
win then Rob followed by Gilbert and Franek Joachim.
Heat eleven and twelve saw easy wins for Nathan Groves and Ryan Hughes.
Heat thirteen, Marcus Wadhams took the win with Paul Timms close behind.
Heat fourteen, Aaron Hughes slid out on the second lap while battling for first. Neil Power took
the win with Chris Timms and Ryan Lewis following.
Heat fifteen, Louis Harvey shot out of the gate with Franek Joachim and Martin Glover chasing him
all the way to the finish line.
Heat sixteen, Marcus Wadhams stormed to victory while a slipping and sliding Aaron chased him.
Heat seventeen, Neil Power took the win with Josh Davis in second. Newport rider, Jacob Soper used
his blocking skills to hold off Adam Bennett. Young Jacob had just bought a new Alloy Archie and
considering how slippery his new tyres were he rode exceedingly well.
Heat eighteen, a win for Ryan Hughes.
Heat nineteen, Nathan Groves and Chris Timms took first and second.
Heat twenty, Louis Harvey out-gated Ryan Lewis to finish the race in first.
