Final league match victory
2009-10-28 19:45 by Gilbert Davis
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club raced their final South West 2009 fixture at home to Southampton this past weekend.
In the division one clash Southampton looked to have the stronger looking side on paper, but the young East Enders put on without doubt their best performance of the season.
Both sides put on a great show and with the scores level at half time 45-45 it was any ones guess who would take the league points. It was no surprise at all to find the sides still level at 85-85 going into the last race. Up stepped Neil Power and Louis Harvey for the East Enders on the outside gates, against former British Champion Gavin Wheeler and Richard Hayes for Southampton, with Richard leading from the tapes Neil made a great pass to take the lead and relegate Richard to 4th place with Louis now in 3rd, in an attempt to get 3rd place Richard was excluded for ramming which brought down Louis who was unable to take his place in the re-run after an injury to his shoulder. In the re-run Gavin Sped from the tapes to win but with the East Newport pairing of Power and reserve Absalom gaining 5 points they came home winners by the narrowest of margins 90-89.
Once again this was a great all round team performance with Neil Power gaining the Man of the match award.

With the Conference team taking to the track after the spectacle of the first match and knowing a win would guarantee the team a top 3 placing they didn't disappoint winning 91 - 51.
Josh Davis put in a great Man of the match performance having his best match of the season and knowing that this side will be staying together for the foreseeable future apart from Colin Widly who raced his last ever conference match due to his age, things are looking good for the Go-ride/Clubmark Welsh outfit.
