UNDERWOOD INDOOR SERIES A HUGE SUCCESS!

2010-02-21 19:52 by Tony Bennett

The final indoor race of the match series, at Underwood, was one of the best.  Even though the Twitchers had already won the series, the other teams wanted to claim second overall.

Heats one and two saw 5-5 draws with no side showing superiority.  Heat three was another matter! From start to finish elbows, feet and bikes were colliding.  Ian Sizer and Ryan Hughes, both proven fast gaters, took turns to lead with skill and determination.  On lap three they clashed resulting in Ian's foot being firmly wedged in Ryan's frame. This allowed Louis Harvey to undertake both and steal the lead.  Ian was able to free himself, chase a hard charging Matt Davis and claim third. Ryan unfortunately was lapped.  6-3 to the GHN`s.

Heat four saw "journeyman" Tudor Coombes take Josh Davis`s ride.  Tudors ongoing, battle-royale, with Ieuan Payne was continued in today's race.  This time Ieaun won.  Both these young riders have shown 100% commitment to training which will serve them well during the outdoor season. Another 5-5.

Heat five.  An excellent ride by the fitter, lighter and stronger Colin Wildy saw him team ride with Gilbert Davis to force a 5-5 draw.

Heat six.  A mistake by Matt Davis allowed Aaron Hughes and Rob Absalom to hold the middle positions for yet another 5-5 draw.  At the halfway mark.  TU 20 pts, FB 18 pts and GHN`s 20 pts.

Heat seven.  A restart was needed after Josh Davis held a firm but tight line thereby forcing Gilbert wide and into the wall.  The rerun saw Neil Power fly from the gate leaving Colin and Gilbert to sneak, second and third, after poor Josh fell on the last turn of the last lap.  5-5 draw.

Heat eight.  Young Tudor now took the place of Rob, in a different team, to battle his nemesis Ieuan!  Ieuan again pipped him at the finish line with Aaron beating Dan Bock. Another 5-5.

Heat nine saw the pairing of Ryan Hughes and Matt Davis blast to victory.

Heat ten.  The last race for the Twitchers and a 7-3 win was required to give them a chance of winning the match.  Rob and Aaron successfully kept Louis Harvey at bay for the whole four laps. Twitchers finished on 40 points.

Heat eleven.  First time that Ryan Hughes and Neil Power had raced each other.  A close race with Ryan taking the win and his team mate, Matt coming third.  This 6-4 win meant the Frame Benders now needed a minimum 5-5, in the next race, to win the match.

Heat twelve.  Louis Harvey versus Dan Bock with Tudor versus Ieuan.  What a race!  Louis outgated everyone while Dan tried to bring his partner Ieuan through into third.  Tudor was having none of this and eventually picked a perfect line to undertake Ieuan.  6-4 to the GHN`s, who finished on 37 points.  The four hard earned points for the Frame Benders meant that they ended the match on exactly the same number of points as the Twitchers, 40 points a piece.

Under League rules, both winning teams received 2.5 league points with the GHN`s claiming 1 point.

Final standings:

Twitchers United 15.5pts with the Frame Benders and Ginger Hob Nobs drawn on 10.5 league points each.  A run-off between Ryan Hughes (FB) and Louis Harvey (GHN) was needed to
determine the second and third League positions.  Ryan claimed the fourth grid.  He out-gated Louis but Louis used his wider and faster line to undertake Ryan on turn two.  Ryan was all over Louis and
nudged him wide to retake first.  Not to be out done Louis tried to dive under Ryan on turn three but slid out enabling Ryan to pull away and win the final race of the day.
