Welsh Indoor team challenge

With work commitments and transport problems, it was left to the two Newport clubs and a Birmingham rider to form two teams for a 15 heat Welsh challenge match. After the teams were drawn it was hard to judge whether The Toy Perambulators (TTP) or The Great Pretenders (TGP), would win!
Heat One. Ryan Hughes stormed to a win with a faultless gate. Opposition riders, Colin Wildy and Dan Bock, used their home track advantage to hold off indoor first timer, William Oliviera. 5-5.
Heat Two. One of the biggest cheers of the day was produced when Adam Bennett was able to undertake a sliding Ben Mould and claim a third position. Ben's choice of slick tyres were unable to cope with the dusty surface of the Underwood hall and finished the race with a wry smile! Neil Power held off Joe Lewis to take the win. 6-4 TTP.
Heat Three. Aaron Hughes flew out of the gate to remain untroubled and take the heat win. Rob Absalom and Ryan Lewis led a struggling Jack Harold who had yet to get to grips with the slick surface. 5-5.
Heat Four. Dan Bock led from start to finish with Joe Lewis failing to get past. Joe tried everything but was also having to defend his second position against Adam Bennett. 6-4 TGP.
Heat Five. This race promised to be a cracker. Three restarts raised the tension even further! Sibling rivalry forced younger brother Aaron to fairly block opposition rider Ryan on turn three. Ryan slid out and made a protest to the referee. His continued protest ended in an exclusion! Ben Mould, after a change of tyres, took the win. 5-4 TGP.
Heat six. A splendid team ride by Rob Absalom, who shepherded team mate Ryan Lewis to a 7-3 win for TTP.
Heat Seven. A mistake by Ben, crossing the start lanes, resulted in a exclusion. The restart saw Jack Harold prove he is worthy of Welsh squad inclusion with a superb second place behind team mate Neil Power. Though fairly new to cycle-speedway Jack is a rider to watch out for in the future. 7-2 TGP.
Heat Eight. Chris Davies, who took the remaining rides of Ryan Hughes, narrowly missed out on finishing in first place against Neil Power. Third and fourth place saw the Oliviera brothers, Dan and William battling hard. Younger brother Dan executed a fine undertake and nudge on the last turn to cross the line in third. 6-4 TGP.
Heat Nine. Dan excluded for running with his bike after a collision and fall on turn two. His fellow team mate, Jack, who was also caught up the melee tried his hardest to catch the opposition but needed another lap in which to do so! 7-2 TTP.
Heat Ten. A 5-5 draw with Rob defending all of Neils attempts to pass him.
Heat Eleven. Aaron shot out of the gate with what looked like an easy win. Chris Davies had other ideas! Every lap he would gain on Aaron but fall back after Aaron skillfully defended his line. Again and again, Chris's smooth race line enabled him to claw back the lost distance
but in the end he just ran out of time. 5-5.
Heat Twelve. This heat is best summed up with Neil Powers last lap move, against the on-form Rob, to steal second place. 6-4 TTP.
Heat Thirteen. The Perambulators needed a 7-3 win to take the lead for the first time, by just one point! Ben Mould flew out of the gate and tried to bring through fellow rider Joe Lewis but the home track advantage of Colin and Dan was to prove too much. 5-5.
Heat Fourteen. With the scores at 62 for The Toy Perambulators and 65 for The Great Pretenders either team was still in with a chance of winning the match. Jack and Adam (TGP) controlled the middle two positions with ease and forced a 5-5 draw.
Heat Fifteen. The last heat saw a fine end to a well ridden match. A 7-3 win for TTP`s would have won them the match. Alas it was not to be with Aaron leading from the start to get a 5-5 draw.
